Photo challenge

A photo challenge is a set subject that guests are asked to photograph at an event, such as "a selfie with the couple" or "someone mid-laugh".

B

  1. Bachelor & bachelorette partyA bachelor or bachelorette party is a celebration held shortly before a wedding, where the groom or bride spends a night or weekend with close friends, usually without their partner. In the UK it is called a stag do or hen party; in Germany a JGA.
  2. Best man & maid of honourThe best man and maid of honour are the closest friends or relatives who stand beside the groom and bride, help plan the wedding and often give a speech. In Germany the equivalent role is the Trauzeuge or Trauzeugin.

C

  1. Candid photosCandid photos are unposed shots: the people in them aren't arranging themselves for the camera but are captured in a real moment – laughing, talking or dancing.
  2. ConsentConsent is a person's freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous agreement to their personal data, such as photos of them, being used for a particular purpose. Under the GDPR it is one of several legal bases for processing.

D

  1. Digital disposable cameraA digital disposable camera is an app or web camera that brings the disposable-camera idea to phones: every guest gets a limited number of shots, and nobody sees the photos until later, usually the day after the event.
  2. Disposable cameraA disposable camera is a simple film camera that comes preloaded with a roll for a fixed number of shots. Once the roll is finished, you hand in the whole camera for developing and get your photos back as prints or scans.

E

  1. Event codeAn event code is an identifier that points to one specific event, so guests and tools can find it. In Filmriss, the host receives the event code as soon as they have created an event in the app.
  2. EXIF dataEXIF data is the extra information cameras and smartphones save inside a photo file, such as the date and time, camera model, exposure settings and, if enabled, the GPS location where the photo was taken.

F

  1. Film (in Filmriss)In photography, film is the light-sensitive material that holds a fixed number of exposures. In Filmriss, “film” means the shots each guest can take at an event; once the shot limit is reached, the film is full.
  2. Film grainFilm grain is the fine, random texture visible on analog photos. It comes from the silver crystals in the film's emulsion and is most noticeable with fast film and in low light.

G

  1. GalleryA gallery is an organised collection of images that people can browse together. In Filmriss, it is the collection of all photos from an event, which opens for everyone at once at the reveal, with downloads in original quality.
  2. GDPRThe GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is the EU law that sets the rules for processing personal data, which can include photos in which people are recognisable. It has applied across the EU since 25 May 2018.
  3. Group photoA group photo is a picture showing several people together – at a party usually lined up on purpose so that everyone is actually in it. It's often the shot that ends up in the photo book or framed on the wall.
  4. Guest bookA guest book is a book in which visitors or guests write their names, wishes and memories – at celebrations, usually as a keepsake for the hosts.
  5. Guest photosGuest photos are pictures that guests take themselves at an event, as opposed to shots from a hired photographer or a photo booth.

I

  1. Icebreaker gamesIcebreaker games are short, low-pressure games at the start of a party or gathering that get people who barely know each other talking – without anyone having to give a speech or look silly.
  2. Image compressionImage compression is any method that makes a photo's file smaller. Lossy methods such as JPEG permanently discard some image data, and many messaging apps compress photos by default when you send them.
  3. Instant cameraAn instant camera is a camera that ejects each photo as a physical print right after you take it. The picture then develops by itself within a few minutes, with no lab needed.

L

  1. Live photo wallA live photo wall is a screen or projector that shows guests' photos during the event itself, usually as a running slideshow that updates as soon as new pictures are uploaded.

M

  1. Magic mirror photo boothA magic mirror is a photo booth built into a tall, full-length mirror: a camera and touch display sit inside the frame, on-screen animations guide guests through the shot, and they can often sign or add stickers right on the glass before printing.

N

  1. Night modeNight mode is a smartphone camera feature that, in low light, combines several frames or longer exposures into one brighter, less noisy photo without using the flash.

O

  1. Original qualityOriginal quality means a photo is stored or shared exactly as the camera captured it: at full resolution and without any extra compression.

P

  1. Photo bingoPhoto bingo is a party game in which guests photograph the prompts on a bingo card with their phones and cross them off; the first to complete a line wins.
  2. Photo bookA photo book is a printed, bound book of your own photos, usually laid out in an app or online editor and then printed by a photo service.
  3. Photo boothA photo booth is a self-service camera setup you can hire for events: guests pose in front of a camera and backdrop, take the picture themselves and often get a print on the spot.
  4. Photo challengeA photo challenge is a set subject that guests are asked to photograph at an event, such as "a selfie with the couple" or "someone mid-laugh".
  5. Place cardA place card is a small, usually folded card at each seat that shows who sits where; it often carries extra details such as a QR code.

Q

  1. QR codeA QR code is a square, two-dimensional barcode made of light and dark dots that phone cameras can read. It usually holds a web link that opens as soon as someone scans it.

R

  1. ResolutionA photo's resolution is the number of pixels it contains, given as width × height or in megapixels. Above all, it decides how large you can print the image while keeping it sharp.
  2. Retention periodA retention period is how long stored data is kept before it is deleted. The GDPR doesn't set one fixed period; it requires personal data to be kept in a form that identifies people no longer than its purpose requires.
  3. RevealA reveal is the moment when photos that were held back are shown for the first time. In Filmriss, the gallery then opens for all guests at once, by default at 10 am the morning after the event.

S

  1. Save the dateA save the date is an early notice that tells guests the date and location of a wedding or event so they can keep it free. The formal invitation with full details follows later.
  2. Secret SantaSecret Santa is a Christmas gift exchange in which everyone in a group draws one name at random and gives that person a small gift, usually without revealing who it's from.
  3. Shot limitA shot limit is the fixed number of photos each person can take at an event. In Filmriss, the host sets it per guest: anywhere from 1 to 50 shots, with 15 as the default.
  4. Shot listA shot list is a written list of the photos that must not be missed at a wedding or event – mainly group shots, key moments of the day and the people who matter most.

T

  1. Team buildingTeam building is any planned activity that helps colleagues get to know each other, build trust and work better together – from a facilitated workshop to a game at the office party.

W

  1. Wedding hashtagA wedding hashtag is a custom tag, such as #EmmaAndLeoSayIDo, that a couple asks guests to add when posting wedding photos and videos on social media, so all public posts can be found in one place.
